Puball Allais: Walk, Wood-Fired Sauna Ritual & Wild Atlantic Dip | Castle Haven
7:30AM Daily – Gentle stroll to holy well, three guided heat & water rituals in our wood-fired Puball Allais with Atlantic dips, finishing with tea, yoghurt & seasonal fruit. €79pp for couples; €360 for up to 8 guests.
Start the morning with a quiet coastal stroll to Tobar Bearcháin as first light lifts over the water. We move at an easy, unhurried pace, pausing at the holy well and along the shoreline, sharing stories of water, the sea, and the lived dúchas of this rugged stretch of the Wild Atlantic Way.
What follows is not a sauna in the modern sense, but a guided heat and water ritual rooted in older Irish traditions, with some modern influences. Our puball allais draws inspiration from the Irish Tigh Allais, or sweat-house, once widespread across rural Ireland. Hundreds of these small stone structures still dot the Irish landscape, including examples here in West Cork, where heat was used to ease the body, settle the mind, and bring people back into rhythm with themselves. You’ll also find echoes here of Finnish sauna, Baltic pirts, German Aufguss, and other long-standing traditions where heat, cold, and breath are woven together.
We move gently between warmth and sea, between the heat of the puball allais and the open Atlantic. Heat builds, steam rises, the cuisle of the puball allais meets the skin, and the cold water answers it. There is no rush. The body finds its own way through the contrast, through release and reset.
This is a small-group, sensory experience, grounded and unhurried. It’s not about heat for heat’s sake, but about the rhythm between elements, and how that rhythm lands in you.
We finish with our special tea, local yoghurt and seasonal fruit, letting the morning take its own shape before heading back up the narrow bóithrín that brought us down to this place.
Book a private session and bring up to 8 guests along, or join as an individual as part of a shared ritual.
