Join us for an unforgettable cycling tour through the stunning beauty of this part of West Cork which includes Myross, Leap and Glandore. Along the way we will explore the rich folklore from this area of the Wild Atlantic Way which was once the seat of the O'Donovan clan.

Starting in the charming fishing village of Union Hall, we'll lead you on a thrilling journey of about 20km through the winding roads and rolling hills of this picturesque region. Of course locally, a small road is called a boithrín and a small hill is known as a cnocán or a concánín.

Pedalling through tranquil woodlands and rugged coastlines, we will explore ancient ruins such as the penal era chapel, Séipéal an Stuaicín and towering castles such as Caisleán Rathín built by Domhnall Ó Donnabháin about 1584. With breathtaking views of Castlehaven Harbour, it still has Cromwell's cannonballs embedded in its ancient walls.

But this tour isn't just about sightseeing - it's a chance to immerse yourself in the unique culture of West Cork. As we pedal through the countryside, our knowledgeable guide will share fascinating stories of murders, ghosts, and other legendary creatures that have long been a part of the area's rich folklore.

We stop for each story so the pace is very relaxed. Much of the folklore is associated with Clann Ó Donnabháin or the O'Donovan clan who were the dominant clan locally. Highlights include the wonderful story of Corcán Sheáin de Bhuala one of the finest folklore tales in Ireland and we tell this story where the events actually happened.

You'll even learn a few phrases in the local dialect, gaining a deeper appreciation for the area's unique heritage. Focail is the Irish for "words" and we will share a few everyday words still used locally, many of which don't really have a direct English equivalent. Examples include

  • Slachtmar - is a sense of order, neatness or a tidy place
  • Meas - a sense of deep respect or estimation of a person or thing . As with all Irish emotions it is used by "putting it on" the object

But what really sets this tour apart is the personal touch. Our guides are all local to this area of West Cork, and they'll share their own experiences and insights into the area's history and culture. As you pedal through this magical landscape, you'll feel a connection to the place that only a local can provide.

This tour is perfect for anyone who loves cycling, history, and the great outdoors - whether you're a seasoned pro or just a casual rider. So join us for an unforgettable journey through the heart of West Cork's folklore and culture, and experience the beauty of this special place for yourself
