Beannachtaí Bearcháin

1 hour and 30 minutes

Moderate

8am Dec 3rd 2024. We mark the feast day of the local saint Bearcháin and get the open-water swimmers beannacht or blessing for the year ahead at his well Tobar Bearcháin near Castlehaven Strand.

We will meet just before 8AM and walk down the short bóithrín known as Bóthar an Gleanna that leads directly to the pilgrims path in beautiful Gleann Bearcháin.

At this point we will get a short overview on St. Bearcháin and the local traditions and folklore associated with him. Then onto the holy well where we will get the traditional beannacht (blessing) from Saint Bearcháin for seafarers and open-water swimmers by visiting this secluded well. This holy well is known as Tobar Bearcháin and the most auspicious days to visit are on the mornings closest to his feast day - December 3rd.

After taking to the sea at Castlehaven Strand strand, join fellow dippers and swimmers for hot drinks and snacks above the strand as we share some more local traditions, words and stories about the sea.

This ancient pilgrimage is about 300 years older than the Camino and dates from c. the 6th century.
